When you’re clearing out your home, it’s easy to think of everything as “junk.” But at Hagemeister Hauling, we see things differently. Many of the items we pick up are still in great shape and deserve a second home rather than a spot in the landfill.

Part of our mission is to reduce waste by donating gently used furniture and household goods to local charities. Not only does this support Winnipeggers in need, but it also keeps our city a little greener.

Here is a guide to the local charities we love to support and what they are looking for.

1. Centre Flavie

Centre Flavie is an incredible organization that provides furniture and household items free of charge to people living in poverty or transitioning out of difficult situations.

  • Location: 301 Archibald Street
  • What they accept:Bedroom Furniture: Dressers, nightstands, armoires.
    • Living Room: Sofas, loveseats, armchairs, end tables.
    • Kitchen: Tables and chairs.
    • Appliances: Working washers, dryers, fridges, and stoves.
    • Other: Cribs, baby accessories, and bedding.

2. Canadian Goodwill Industries

Goodwill is a staple in Winnipeg, using the proceeds from their thrift stores to fund vocational training and employment services for people with disabilities.

  • Main Location: 70 Princess Street, plus various drop-off centers throughout the city.
  • What they accept:
    • Small & Large Furniture: Must be in reusable condition.
    • Kitchenware: Glassware, pots, pans, and cutlery.
    • Electronics: Working appliances and small electronics.
    • Textiles: Curtains, linens, and clothing.

3. Value Village

Value Village partners with local nonprofits (like Big Brothers Big Sisters of Winnipeg and Diabetes Canada). When you donate here, they pay these nonprofits for your items, helping them fund their community programs.

  • Locations:
    • West Winnipeg: 3629 Portage Ave.
    • Nairn: 970 Nairn Ave.
    • Pembina: 1729 Pembina Hwy.
    • Jefferson: 942 Jefferson Ave.
    • Ellice: 1695 Ellice Ave.
    • Kenaston: 1731 Kenaston Blvd.
  • What they accept:
    • Furniture: Small tables, chairs, and bookshelves (space permitting).
    • Housewares: Decor, lamps, and mirrors.
    • Media: Books, DVDs, and board games.
    • Clothing: All types of apparel and footwear.

What Makes an Item “Donatable”?

Charities have limited space and resources, so they generally only accept items that are:

  • Clean: No major stains, pet hair, or odors.
  • Functional: Doors and drawers should open properly; appliances must work.
  • Safe: No broken glass, protruding nails, or structural damage.

Pro-Tip: If you wouldn’t give it to a friend, it’s likely better suited for recycling or disposal.

Let Hagemeister Hauling Do the Driving

Donating a heavy sofa or a full dining set is a lot of work. You need a truck, a couple of strong backs, and the time to drive across Winnipeg.

When you hire Hagemeister Hauling, just let us know which items you’d like to see donated. If they meet the charity’s criteria, we’ll handle the heavy lifting and the delivery to these great local organizations for you.
